What a serious firing actually costs in labor

A university account of a wood firing gives the arithmetic. The kiln is 4 feet wide by 16 feet long and 5 feet tall, and the firing ran 33 and a half hours inside a total process of roughly 81 hours, from loading on a Thursday evening to opening the following Tuesday. It burned nearly two cords of wood, held around 2,531 degrees and carried about 200 pieces. Three students worked with an associate professor and visiting faculty, stoking the fire boxes and recording temperatures.

That is the honest scale of an atmospheric firing. The mistake a home maker makes is not the technique; it is planning a project that needs four people and a weekend when the actual resource is one person and an evening.

The design problem has not changed

An account of ancient Greek ceramic kilns describes partly underground structures with two compartments: a lower combustion chamber, often dug into the ground and averaging about 1.3 meters across, and an upper firing chamber, separated by a perforated floor called an eschara. Fuel burned at a stoking chamber entrance and heat drafted up through that floor. Pots were separated by pyramidal supports and clay rings, and the roof was a temporary construction of bricks or sherds plastered with clay, with a vent for visual checks, dismantled and rebuilt each firing.

Every element has a modern counterpart: a heat source, a way to move heat evenly, furniture to keep pots apart, and a way to watch. A home electric kiln automates the first two and leaves the rest to you.
