Why plaster works

A materials engineering teaching lab explains the mechanism behind every plaster surface in a pottery studio. In slip casting, slip is poured into a mold that removes liquid from the slip near the mold wall, because the mold is porous and the liquid wicks into the pores by capillary action, the same force that draws a drink up a straw. Those molds are made by mixing gypsum and water in a 4 to 3 ratio and letting it harden around a replica of the shape wanted.

A wedging slab is the same physics without the cavity. It pulls water out of clay at the contact face, which is why a plaster surface stiffens clay as you work it and why a bucket of reclaim slop dries out on plaster overnight.

Ratios are not optional

Mixed too thin, plaster sets soft, absorbs unevenly and crumbles into your clay. Studio practice puts a number on it: one university fabrication lab's casting instructions give a plaster to water ratio of 1 to 0.75 and note that small objects usually harden in about 30 minutes, with safety glasses worn while mixing.

Two rules follow for a home studio. Weigh your plaster and water rather than judging by consistency. And never rinse plaster into a drain, where it sets into a solid mass in the trap.

The pattern is that each surface has one job and one location. Studios that mix jobs on one table are the ones where plaster ends up in the clay.

The habit that makes it work

Wipe every surface twice with a wet sponge at the end of a session, while the residue is still soft. Once clay dries onto a table, cleaning it becomes a dust-raising operation instead of a wiping one, and the dust settles on everything else. That single habit does more for a studio than any equipment choice, and it is the same discipline behind the failure mechanisms worth avoiding and the surface choices a first setup makes.

Common questions

How do I know when a plaster slab is worn out?

When the surface no longer draws water quickly, or when it chalks under a fingernail. A slab that sheds particles is a contamination risk and should be replaced.

Can I dry plaster slabs in the oven?

No. Overheating plaster damages it, and a kitchen oven is the wrong place for studio materials. Air dry it fully in a warm room.

Does slip need anything besides clay and water?

Yes. Casting slip uses a deflocculant so the particles stay suspended without adding too much water, which is why a homemade mix of clay and water behaves differently.

Should the wedging table be movable?

Better if it is not. Wedging puts real force into a surface, and a table that shifts under you makes the job harder and the wrist strain worse.
