Firing through a British Columbia winter with garage kilns and drying schedules

Why BC coastal humidity stretches greenware drying schedules

Coastal British Columbia does not dry clay the way the rest of the country does. From October through March, relative humidity in Victoria, Vancouver and Prince Rupert often sits high enough that a mug left on a shelf loses water slowly, and unevenly, across its walls.

That matters because greenware drying is not one process. A piece first loses surface water, then the water bound between clay platelets, and each stage wants a different rate. Push the second stage too fast in damp air and you get the classic split base or a crack that opens at the rim during bisque.

In a heated inland studio, a mug might be bone dry in three or four days. In a garage on the coast in January, the same mug can take a week or more, and the outer wall can read dry while the base is still cool and damp to the touch.

Cold makes this worse. A garage that sits at 6 to 10 degrees Celsius holds far more moisture in the air than a room at 20, and clay releases water into that air until the two reach balance. If the garage never warms, the clay never finishes giving up its water.

The practical answer is to stop guessing. Weigh a test piece, write the date on it, and weigh it again every day. When the number stops falling for two days, the piece is as dry as that space will let it get.

This is the same discipline behind any careful home kiln setup, and it costs nothing but a kitchen scale and a marker.

A working greenware drying schedule for damp coastal air

Use this as a starting point, then adjust for your own garage. Times assume a piece no thicker than 8 mm and a garage between 8 and 14 degrees Celsius.

Thicker work, handbuilt slabs and anything with a joined base needs more. Double the times for a piece over 12 mm thick, and never rush a piece that still feels cool against your cheek.

Dehumidifier and condensation control in a garage kiln setup

A dehumidifier is the single most useful piece of equipment in a coastal garage studio. It does two jobs: it pulls water out of the air so greenware can finish drying, and it keeps the kiln's steel shell and elements from collecting condensation between firings.

Size it to the space, not the kiln. A 20 to 30 litre per day unit suits a single-car garage that is reasonably sealed. A larger, draughtier garage needs more capacity, or you need to section off a drying corner with plastic sheeting and treat that as the drying room.

Run it on a timer or a humidistat set around 50 to 55 per cent relative humidity. Below that, clay dries too fast at the surface and you invite cracking. Above it, nothing dries at all. Empty the tank daily, or plumb a hose to a drain so you are not relying on memory.

Air movement matters as much as moisture removal. A small oscillating fan on low, pointed across the shelf rather than at one piece, keeps the boundary layer moving. Do not aim a fan at a single pot, and do not run a fan on a piece that is still plastic.

Condensation control is the second half of the job, and it is where a garage kiln winter goes wrong. When a kiln heats, the steel shell stays cool for the first while, and moist garage air condenses on it. That water can drip onto elements or run down to the floor.

Steps to control it:

  1. Warm the garage to at least 10 degrees Celsius before you load, using a space heater with the kiln off.
  2. Wipe the kiln shell and lid dry, and check the element grooves for any damp film.
  3. Crack the lid for the first 30 to 60 minutes of the firing so water vapour leaves instead of settling.
  4. Watch the peephole for steam, and hold the low setting until it clears.
  5. Close the lid and continue the climb once the ware is past 200 degrees Celsius.

If your kiln sits on a concrete floor, raise it on a stand or a sheet of rigid insulation. Concrete wicks groundwater in coastal garages, and a cold slab under a kiln keeps the base of the shell wet.

Siting a garage kiln for rain, salt air and temperature swings

Where the kiln sits decides how much of this you have to fight. A kiln jammed against a garage door that opens to wind-driven rain will cycle through damp and dry all winter, and no dehumidifier will keep up.

Put the kiln on an interior wall, ideally the wall shared with the house. That wall stays warmer, it is out of the prevailing weather, and it is usually the furthest point from the door. Leave at least 30 cm of clearance on all sides and above, and more if the manufacturer specifies it.

Salt air is a real factor within a few kilometres of the coast. Airborne chloride settles on steel and on element terminals, and it accelerates corrosion on a kiln that lives in an unheated space. Keep the lid closed when the kiln is idle, and wipe the shell down monthly with a dry cloth.

Temperature swings do their own damage. A garage that hits 15 degrees in the afternoon and 2 degrees overnight will condense moisture on every cold metal surface, including shelves, kiln furniture and tools. Insulating the garage door and sealing obvious draughts does more for your firing consistency than any controller upgrade.

Reading BC weather and severe weather alerts before a firing day

A firing takes hours you cannot easily interrupt. That makes the forecast part of your loading decision, not an afterthought.

Start with your regional forecast. Environment and Climate Change Canada publishes current conditions and forecasts by location through its weather service, and the local numbers for your area are more useful than a provincial average.

Look at overnight lows, wind, and the chance of precipitation over the full window of your firing and cool down.

Wind warnings matter because a power interruption mid-firing leaves ware stranded at temperature, and an outage during cool down can shock a kiln. Winter storm and rainfall warnings matter because they often arrive with the same conditions that flood a garage floor.

Severe weather alerts for your region are listed through the Government of Canada alert service, and a two-minute check before loading is cheap insurance.

What to do when a warning is out:

  1. Delay the firing if the warning covers your area during the firing window.
  2. If you must fire, load only work you can afford to lose.
  3. Keep the kiln on a circuit that is not shared with heaters or freezers.
  4. Have a plan for a power cut: leave the kiln closed and let it cool naturally rather than reopening it.
  5. Note the outcome in your firing log so the next decision is easier.

A firing log pays for itself in a coastal winter. Record the garage temperature, the humidity reading, the load, the schedule and the result. Over a season you will see which conditions produce the underfiring, crazing and surface faults that are really drying and moisture problems in disguise.

A winter drying and firing schedule for coastal studios

This is a workable weekly rhythm for a garage studio on the BC coast from November to March. Shift the days to suit your own commitments, but keep the order.

Days 1 to 3: throw and cover. Work under plastic, out of draughts, in the warmest corner you have. Do not put fresh work near the dehumidifier.

Days 4 to 8: dry slowly. Uncover, turn pieces once a day, keep the dehumidifier running at 50 to 55 per cent. Move pieces closer to the unit as they stiffen.

Days 9 to 12: finish drying and weigh. Weigh each piece daily. When the weight holds for two days, it is ready. Trim, attach handles and let those dry too.

Day 13: candling. Load the kiln and run a slow low-temperature hold, lid cracked, to drive off the last of the chemically bound water. This is the step that saves a load when the garage has been damp all week.

Day 14: bisque. Run your normal bisque schedule once the candling hold is complete and the peephole shows no steam.

Glaze days: check the forecast first. Glazing and glaze firing in the same week as a storm warning is asking for trouble. If the alert covers your area, glaze and wait.

Treat the whole cycle as a set of firing exercises: change one variable at a time, such as the length of the candling hold, and see what the result tells you about your space. That is how you build a schedule that fits your garage instead of one copied from a drier climate.

What damp air does to glaze storage and bisque

Damp air does not stop at greenware. It reaches into every bucket and every bisqued shelf in the studio.

Glaze buckets left open in a humid garage take on water from the air. The specific gravity drifts, the glaze gets thinner on application, and the fired result shifts with it.

Seal every bucket with a lid, and store them off the concrete floor on a shelf or a pallet so the base of the bucket is not sitting in cold, damp air.

Dry glaze materials are worse. Powdered materials in paper sacks or open bins will cake and clump in a coastal winter, and a clumped material will not sieve out. Move dry materials into sealed containers with lids, and keep a small moisture absorber in the storage cabinet if the garage is very damp.

Bisque is porous and will pull moisture from the air. A bisqued pot left on a garage shelf for a month before glazing can read as damp, and glaze applied to it may crawl, blister or flake off in the firing.

Glaze bisque work soon after the bisque firing, or store it indoors in a dry cupboard.

Common questions

How long should greenware dry in a BC garage in winter? Plan on two to three times longer than a heated indoor studio. Weigh pieces daily and wait for the weight to hold for two days before you load.

Do I need a dehumidifier if the garage is cold? Yes. Cold air still holds moisture, and a dehumidifier at 50 to 55 per cent relative humidity keeps both greenware and the kiln shell dry.

Why does my kiln shell drip water at the start of a firing? Moist garage air is condensing on the cool steel. Warm the space first, wipe the shell, and crack the lid for the first 30 to 60 minutes.

Should I fire during a severe weather warning? Only if you can accept losing the load. Wind and winter storm warnings often bring outages, and an interrupted firing is hard to recover.

Can I store glaze buckets on the garage floor? Better not. Concrete stays cold and damp on the coast. Keep sealed buckets on a shelf or pallet, and keep dry materials in lidded containers.
