Drying schedules for a St. John's studio

St. John's is wet, windy and cool. Summer fog and drizzle can hold indoor relative humidity above 70 per cent for days, and winter air indoors is drier only because heating runs constantly.

That split defines the drying schedule. From roughly May to October, greenware dries slowly and unevenly. From November to April, indoor air is dry enough that rims and handles can dry faster than bodies, which is how cracks start.

A workable St. John's schedule looks like this. Throw or handbuild, then wrap the piece loosely in plastic for 24 hours so moisture equalizes through the wall. Unwrap and let it sit in still air, away from any heat source, for three to seven days depending on wall thickness.

For a mug wall of about 6 mm, expect four to five days in summer and two to three in winter. For a 10 mm bowl, expect a week or more in summer. Plates and wide forms dry from the rim inward and need longer.

During a fog spell, do not unwrap everything at once. Move pieces to a shelf with gentle air movement from a small fan pointed at the wall, not at the pots. Candling the kiln at low temperature for a few hours before the main firing is a reasonable final step for work that still feels cool to the touch.

Drying schedules for a Halifax studio

Halifax is milder and slightly drier than St. John's, but it is still a coastal city with fog, rain and high summer humidity. The difference is smaller than most potters expect, and the schedule is only modestly faster.

Halifax also has more indoor climate control. Basements are common studio spaces, and a dehumidifier running in a Halifax basement can hold relative humidity near 50 per cent, which changes everything. With that control, drying becomes predictable rather than weather-dependent.

A worked example

Say you have twelve mugs at 6 mm and two wide platters at 12 mm, and you want to bisque on a Saturday in October in Halifax.

  1. Throw on Monday and Tuesday. Wrap everything overnight.
  2. Unwrap Wednesday morning. Put mugs on an open shelf, platters on a lower shelf with less airflow.
  3. Check Friday. Mugs should be leather-hard to bone dry; platters will still be damp.
  4. Move platters to a warmer, drier spot for Saturday and Sunday.
